THE RISE OF THE ROBOTS - IMAGE ET COMMENTAIRE

Related image

This document is the cover of a magazine called The Economist- it was published in April 2014

There is a drawing, an illustration. The headline is: the rise of the robots.

So we can imagine that the articles deal with the growing role played by robots in every aspect of our lives.

On the picture, there is a huge robot that looks like a human. He is holding a little boy by the hand. On the left, a smaller robot is helping an elderly woman to eat (is feeding an elderly woman). In the sky, a drone is delivering a parcel (a package) for Amazon. A bigger robot is lifting a very heavy object. In the background we can see a very modern city with lots of tall buildings. It looks like a very prosperous city. It shows us what our life could look like in the near future.

On the one hand, robots can have a positive impact on our lives/ they can play a positive role in our lives : they take care of elderly people or young children. With them, they are safe. They become care-givers.

Thanks to them, people have more free time, they don’t have to carry out hard, difficult or dangerous tasks.

On the other hand, they have a negative impact: they steal our jobs; because of them, people lose their jobs, they become unemployed. It will lead to massive unemployment.

It is irresponsible to let a robot take care of a child. Our society could become dehumanized. Human relationships will be limited.

We can also imagine that one day, these robots will turn against us, they will take control of humanity. Humanity will be an endangered species.

ROBOTS ARE A DOUBLE-EDGED SWORD

THEY CAN BE A BLESSING OR A CURSE

THEY HAVE ADVANTAGES BUT ALSO DRAWBACKS

A firm/ a  company

This is happening in Europe, in the UK, in China…

This is happening nowadays  - it is something that will (could) happen in the future

b.      Present 2 our 3 ideas developed in the article, illustrated by example

His/her/their goal is to … (improve, increase, boost, reduce, help, promote, encourage ,allow people to)

In addition, they offer/ they want to/ they say/ they argue that…

Finally, they want to / they hope to…

                In conclusion, I think (I don’t think) it’s a good idea – (effective – a positive step – a step in the right direction – interesting – it’s a good way to… - ) I don’t think I’s such a good idea – I don’t see how this will solve the pb. -

Personally I’m convinced that… it seems to me that …

PART 2: branching out

This document raises an interesting question: what can be done to (improve, change, boost, solve the problem of.)

To go further, I would like to examine the pros and cons / the advantages and drawbacks / the upsides and downsides of …/ on the one hand … on the other hand…

I would like to give a specific example…  I would like to make other suggestions…
